A MAN WHO PERSEVERES AT HIS OCCUPATION

CAPTAIN SAMUEL MANA IS ADMIRED

KAPENA SAMUEL MANA.

Sam Mana is one of the Hawaiians who is employed in the Sailing Profession as a Captain, and he is the only one among us who has been at it from a very long time ago, and because of his fortitude, he has been promoted by his foremen, and has now become the Captain of the ship the Concord.

He was born in Kona, Hawaii in the year 1834, and in the year ’56, he left his place of birth and came here to Honolulu. He saw the land of knife thrusting [?? aina hou pahi], Mexico, while on a whaling expedition, and after that, he got to California in the year 1862. Upon his return, he left the ship and has remained here. At that time, he began sailing on the inter-island ships until he became a Captain for our ships. Mahalo!
